National Careers Service merumuskan keempat unsurnya dalam bentuk lampau: the situation you had to deal with, the task you were given to do, the action you took, dan what happened as a result of your action. Karena seluruh ceritanya sudah selesai, kata kerja utamanya berbentuk lampau.
Pertanyaan perilaku sering dibuka dengan present perfect, misalnya Have you ever dealt with an angry customer? Cambridge menjelaskan pola ini: present perfect membuka pengalaman secara umum, lalu rinciannya diceritakan dengan past simple, seperti Have you seen any Arthur Miller plays? I saw a fantastic production of ‘The Crucible’. Jadi jawabannya Yes, I have. Last year a customer called …, bukan Last year a customer has called ….
Untuk latar situasi, Cambridge memakai past continuous bagi kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung, dan past simple bagi kejadian utama yang menyelanya: I was listening to the radio when Helen phoned. Tindakan diceritakan dengan past simple dan subjek I, karena unsur Action adalah tindakan yang kamu ambil. Hasil ditutup dengan angka bila ada: As a result, complaints fell by 40 per cent. Kata kerja fall tidak beraturan: fall, fell, fallen.
